Meet God - Module 1
Welcome to Module One. I am so excited that you have decided to continue with the “Meet God” series.
The Bible, as ancient text, has passed the test of time. No other book has influenced humanity more than the Bible.
The Bible outstrips any other as the world’s all-time bestseller. It remains so popular today, thousands of years after it was firstwritten, that it is excluded from bestseller lists the world over so that it doesn’t skew the charts. And yet, an increasing number of people are not reading the Bible.
The Bible helps us to stay on course. In reality, many people still believe in the gospel but do not know how to apply the message of the Bible on their life journey. So many people have told me that they started reading the Bible with great enthusiasm but that their enthusiasm did not last long because they found it difficult to understand. Some told me that they felt completely lost in the Bible. This is actually the last place you want to be lost—it is, after all, God’s Word!
Why is it not always easy to understand the Bible? This is because the time, culture and circumstances of the READER (people of the 21stcentury) and the SENDER (writers of the Bible) are quite different.
This course teaches you the method which will help you to bridge these differences. This method is known as the Bible GPS (God Positioning System).
The BIBLE GPS will be your guide to help you to navigate through the Bible and to meet God on your journey. The Bible was never meant to merely inform us; the Bible was meant to transform us.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is probably one of the best inventions of our time. It helps you to find your way and not get lost!
How does the Bible GPS-Method work?
The Bible GPS equips you with 3 steps to help you understand the Bible. These steps are the processes of UNDERSTANDING, APPLICATION and COMMUNICATION. You are going to master these skills. It's not difficult!
Lesson 1 deals with how the Bible came into existence. You will once again realize that no other book equals the Bible.
Lesson 2 deals with the Overview of the Bible. It is important to form a complete picture of the Bible. If you for example are in New York, you know that you are about 4490 km from Los Angeles, CA and about 347 km from Boston, MA.
Lesson 3 covers the different types of literature of the Bible. The Bible writers have different ways to communicate the message (e.g. stories, poems and parables). It is important to identify the type of literature being read because each is being read in a different way. You do for example not read a poem like a story.
In Lesson 4 we are going to master the GPS-Method. It comprises of the Processes of Understanding, Application and Communication.
In Lessons 5 we will get a better understanding of Epistles / Letters.
In Lessons 6-7 we will apply the GPS-Method on two passages from the Epistles.
We believe that a better understanding of the Bible will lead to a fulfilled life. The Bible is literally "God-breathed" (2 Timothy 3:16). In other words, it is God's very words to us. The Bible is a book that is not merely for reading. It is a book for studying so that it can be applied. Otherwise, it is like swallowing food without chewing and then spitting it back out again—no nutritional value is gained by it. The Bible is like a goldmine. It requires digging but the reward is wealth that money cannot buy!
BibleGPS develops easy material (Handbooks, videos, PPT's and devotionals) to enhance your understanding of the Bible and to give you confidence on how to apply God's Word in your daily life. The method we teach we call GPS (God Positioning System).
We call our first series Meet God! It consists of four modules. Each module focuses on a specific type of literature in the Bible.
Module 1 focuses on the Letters of the New Testament.
Module 2 focuses on the Narratives and the Law.
Module 3 focuses on Wisdom, Psalms and the Prophets.
Module 4 focuses on the Gospels and Apocalyptic - Revelation.
Why this Approach?
The Bible was written by more than 40 authors. A specific author (sender) has put the meaning (message) in a specific form (type of literature).
If you are able to interpret e.g. poetry, you will be able to interpret all the poetry parts of the Bible. Think of the different types of literature as different methods of transport e.g. cars, airplanes and ships. It is obvious that you cannot navigate a car like a ship and vice versa. The same principle applies to literature. You cannot interpret a parable like poetry. The language of parables is straight forward, with less figurative language than poetry.
But with these lessons, you will be equipped with the skill to drive, fly and sail. Isn't that cool?
